Dakhia Wheeler's Dance Portfolio
Upon reflecting on my identity as a dancer, I delved into the profound emotions that dance evokes within me and the deep connections it fosters with my inner self and those around me. Prior to embarking on my dance journey years ago, I lacked a complete understanding of myself and my aspirations. However, at the age of seven, I witnessed my first dance performance, and from that moment, I recognized that dance would become my passion and the avenue through which I sought to learn and develop.
Chorecography!

Janet Jackson-Escapade! Choreography by: Anthony Thomas.
The combination I decided to execute is from HipHop 1 that is taught by Beverly Bautista. The name of the piece is Escapade by Janet Jackson and it was made by Anthony Thomas, a really famous choreographer that has worked with Janet Jackson and others as well. This piece is very interesting and I feel like it was a push/challenge for my body and brain because I’m really working on the performance side of my career right now because I really see myself performing and living my life as a dancer before I start my own dance studio and begin teaching others. I just wanted to select this dance because it made me feel good and like a really good performer onstage with other dancers and Janet Jackson so it sort of brought my dreams to life a tad bit. I also wanted to pick this dance because HipHop is my favorite class right now. I feel like I’m learnings much about myself as a dancer and I feel that my confidence and control is even better than what it was 8 weeks ago. I feel like this choreography shows how professional I can be with my performance side and how well I can give my full energy and confidence into the piece that I did. I think when I did this choreography it really shows how good I am with facials and how I feel the music and how I can express that within my movement. Another strength I feel like I had was being ready no matter what I gave everything because you never know if your going into audition or who might be there watching you so you have to give it every time that way you can feel good about what you’ve done and I feel like that’s how this dance makes me feel. Lastly I want to say my overall strength is to be able to do all this together and still keep energy and control and also make it feel and look good and I think I accomplished it all. The way this choreography goes into my interest are really just becoming a performer/background dancer for someone who is well known and I feel like getting this practice and seeing how fast I’m catching on to the moves and how many questions I have while learning and so much more will overall help me get to the goal of becoming a big time performer and then eventually choreographer as well. I think it will also teach me patience with others and myself because sometimes that’sreally important especially while working with others because it can help things go smoother andI think it’s important to know how to act while working with choreographers and other artists as well. Lastly, things I can improve on would have to be maintaining how I started and being able to end even better then how it started, I think that’s important that way the audience doesn’t get bored or start to see mess ups or anything else. Also I feel as if I can improve on finishing all my movements and letting them just flow with my body because I feel like sometimes this can happen for me.
